USC’s Max Miller Named MPSF Men’s Water Polo Tournament MVP
November 21, 2023 | Men's Water Polo
Massimo Di Martire and Carson Kranz also named to MPSF All-Tournament Team.
Fresh off winning its second straight MPSF Tournament championship and securing an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, USC men's water polo has three Trojans on the MPSF All-Tournament Team, led by MVP Max Miller. Miller punched up a career-high seven goals in the MPSF title match to help secure his MVP status, and he has fellow Trojans Massimo Di Martire and Carson Kranz alongside him on the 2023 MPSF All-Tournament Team.
Miller totaled 11 goals across USC's three victories at the 2023 MPSF Tournament, tallying two in the opening 20-4 win over Augustana and then two more as USC upset an undefeated UCLA squad by a solid score of 13-9. In a crucial MPSF final at Cal, Miller's career-high seven goals helped deliver a 13-12 USC win over the host Golden Bears. Miller has scored in USC's last six games, with 17 goals amassed in that run.
Miller is the eighth Trojan to be named MPSF Tournament MVP, following Jake Ehrhardt' s win last season when the Trojans captured the 2022 MPSF Tournament Title. This is Miller's first appearance on an MPSF All-Tournament Team. So, too, is Miller's fellow team captain Carson Kranz making his debut on an MPSF All-Tournament Team. Kranz scored in all three games at the tourney for the Trojans, as did Massimo Di Martire. It's Di Martire's second stint on an MPSF All-Tournament Team, following last year's selection in his first season as a Trojan. At this year's MPSF tourney, Di Martire scored six goals, including a crucial four-goal outing in the title match against Cal.
All three Trojans are closing in on their 100th career goals. In his final season at USC, Di Martire enters NCAA action with 97 career goals. With another year of eligibility apiece, Kranz and Miller currently hold 91 and 90 career goals, respectively.
With a 19th straight NCAA appearance secured, the Trojans set up to host the 2023 NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seeded team. At 15-6 overall, USC will open up against San José State at 6 p.m. on Friday (Dec. 1). All the action will take place at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center, with semifinals set for Saturday (Dec. 2) and the NCAA championship game held at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 3). USC will be aiming to capture its 11th national championship and first since 2018.
