Sampaio's PK Propels USC Women's Soccer to NCAA Second Round
November 10, 2023 | Women's Soccer
LOS ANGELES – Stifling defense and a 66th minute penalty converted by Helena Sampaio propelled the USC women's soccer team past Grand Canyon, 1-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon at McAlister Field.
The 8th-seeded Trojans advance and will play No. 1 seed BYU next week. USC moves to 11-4-3 overall while Grand Canyon ends its season at 14-5-4.
USC held 67% of the possession in the game and limited the visiting Lopes to just four total shots on the afternoon. Grand Canyon had two shots in each half and put only one on target in the second half. USC owned a 7-4 corner kick advantage as well.
Izzy Kimberly was the player who drew the foul in the box midway through the second half, setting up Sampaio for the pk which she calmly slotted home inside the left post. It was Sampaio's sixth goal of the year, tying her for the team lead.
