USC Swimming Opens 2023 Season With Win Over UNLV Rebels

USC freshman Justina Kozan, along with sophomores Marlene Kahler and Artem Selin, each won twice to lead the Trojans to a win over UNLV on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center.

The Trojan women downed the Rebels 148-109 to improve to 4-0, while Troy recorded a 143-111 victory to improve to 2-1 on the year.Â

The Women of Troy opened the morning with a sweep in the 200y medley relay as the Trojans finished 1-2-3 and secured some early points. USC's quartet of Aria Bernal, Kaitlyn Dobler, Anicka Delgado and Hanna Henderson combined to record a 1:41.83 and take the event.

Troy would follow up the relay win with a victory of their own, as Danny Syrkin, Chris O'Grady, Mateo Parker and Artem Selin blasted a 1:28.87 for first.Â

Trojan distance specialist Kahler continued her winning ways from the fall, recording a 10:10.68 to claim the women's 1000y free for USC. She'd pick up her second win of the day in the 500y free, clocking a 4:57.58.Â

USC swept the 200y freestyle as Trojan veterans Isabelle Odgers and Max Saunders each won their respective heats. Odgers posted a 1:51.06, while Saunders touched in 1:38.91.Â

After swimming in the 1000y free to open the meet (10:49.89), defending NCAA Champion Dobler claimed the 100y breaststroke for the Women of Troy in 1:01.43. Dobler, who finished 2022 undefeated in the event, also holds the USC school record (56.93).

The Trojans swept the 50y free as Hanna Henderson (23.30) and Artem Selin (20.05) would each claim their respective splash and dash heats. Touching just behind Selin in the event was junior Mateo Parker in 20.29.Â

Rookie Justina Kozan clocked a 54.91 en route to a win in the 100y back, finishing just ahead of grad transfer Bernal (55.83). Later Kozan would claim the 100y fly in 55.10.Â

Olympian Delgado recorded a 50.70 in the 100y free to lead a 1-2 Trojan finish in the event. Freshman Kozan would touch shortly behind in 51.62.Â

Selin claimed his second event of the day with a victory in the 100y free, recording a 44.49 as he led a 1-2-3 Trojan sweep in the event. Touching second was Saunders in 44.97, followed by Parker in third (45.35).Â

Other Trojan wins came from I. Odgers (200y breaststroke – 2:12.62), Ben Dillard (200y breaststroke – 1:59.91), O'Grady (200y IM – 1:50.11), Harry Homans (200y back – 1:47.93) and Danny Syrkin (100y fly – 48.79).Â

Both squads closed out the afternoon with wins in the 200y free relay as sprinters Dobler, Henderson, Ashley McMillan and Hannah Kuchler would combine to take the event in 1:34.60 for the Women of Troy, while Selin, Saunders, Parker and Syrkin would win it on the men's side (1:20.59).Â

Next up the Trojans host UCSD and Denver (men) for a Saturday, Jan. 14 dual at 12 p.m. at the  Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The Trojan diving squad will head across town next weekend for the Bruin Diving Invitational, Friday through Sunday at the Spieker Aquatic Center.Â
