Bob Hooks, USC Football's 1952 All-Conference End, Dies

LOS ANGELES--Bob Hooks, an All-Pacific Coast Conference end at USC in 1952 on the Trojans' Rose Bowl championship team, died on Aug. 22 of natural causes in Torrance, Calif.  He was 92.Â
Hooks lettered at USC in 1951 and 1952 after previously playing at Washington High in Los Angeles and El Camino Junior College in Torrance (Calif.).  In his senior year, the Trojans defeated Wisconsin, 7-0, in the 1953 Rose Bowl to finish the season with a 10-1 record and a No. 5 ranking in the final AP poll.  His 1950 El Camino team, which won the school's first conference championship, was inducted into the El Camino College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.Â
Hooks was a 16th round pick in the 1952 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams as a junior.Â
He also was a javelin thrower on the 1951 USC track team.Â
After USC, Hooks was in the real estate and mortgage businesses.Â
His brother, Roger, lettered at quarterback for USC in 1954.  His grandson, Rob Hooks, was a walk-on fullback at USC in the spring of 2007, while another grandson, Ted Landers, was a walk-on quarterback briefly at USC in 2013 who also played at UCLA (2009), El Camino Junior College (2010) and Mt. San Antonio Junior College (2011-12).  His son-in-law, Bill Landers, played football at Kansas State.  His granddaughter, Jackie Landers, played volleyball at Azusa Pacific (2010-12) and Winthrop (2013).Â
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Barbara, his daughters Virginia Wood (William), Kathleen Gloyd (Randy) and Carolyn Landers (Bill) and his son John (Pam), as well as 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
