USC Baseball Slugs its Way to a Sweep of Nevada
March 14, 2021 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team hit four homers and held the Nevada bats in check, beating the Wolfpack 7-2 on Sunday afternoon to finish off a sweep of the three-game series.
The Trojans move to 6-6 on the year, while Nevada drops to 4-7.
Carson Wells got the scoring started for USC in the second inning, driving in a run on a single in his first collegiate start. Jamal O'Guinn and Rhylan Thomas then hit back-to-back solo-homers in the third to make it a 3-0 game.
Garret Guillemette joined in the action in the fifth, hitting his first collegiate home run with a solo-shot, and Nate Clow would smash a bomb to right in the sixth to make it 5-1 USC. Guillemette also added a two-run single in the sixth to give the Trojans a 7-1 advantage.
Alex Cornwell tossed 6.2 strong innings, giving up just one run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Charlie Hurley relieved Cornwell in the seventh and tossed 1.1 hitless innings, striking out two of the four batters he faced. Jaden Agassi tossed the ninth, giving up a one-out RBI double before settling in to get two quick outs and end the game. The Trojan pitching staff did not allow a walk or hit-by-pitch on the afternoon.
USC had 11 hits in the game and no errors for the second time this weekend. The Trojans' four homers were the most in a game by a USC team since May 26, 2017 at Washington.
