USC Baseball Downs LMU 5-0 Behind Strong Arms and Clutch Bats
February 20, 2021 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team got a strong start from Chandler Champlain and the bats broke things open late to pick up a 5-0 victory and series win over LMU on Saturday at Dedeaux Field.
Â
Champlain tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win and help USC move to 2-0 on the year. Brian Gursky picked up the save, tossing the final three innings without allowing a run.
Â
USC jumped on top in the bottom of the first, getting an RBI single from freshman Nate Clow. The Trojans held that slim lead until the sixth when John Thomas singled in another run to give USC a two-run cushion. After a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch brought home a run in the seventh, Jamal O'Guinn singled home another to make it 4-0 USC. Tyresse Turner capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Â
Champlain struck out six batters in the game and did not allow a walk, while Gursky struck out four and also did not give up a free pass. LMU didn't get a runner past first against Champlain until the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Lions got a runner to third with two outs, but Champlain struck the final batter out to end the frame and keep it 1-0 USC.
Â
After retiring six in a row to start his outing, Gursky had to work out of a jam in the ninth, getting some help from his defense with a 6-4-3 game-ending double-play.
