USC senior Gabriela Ruffels, less than two weeks shy of beginning defense of her 2019 U.S. Women's Amateur title, is one of three women set to become the first to tee off in the near-60-year history of the Jacksonville Amateur which begins Thursday (July 23).
Ruffels was the first woman ever to enter the tournament, set for the Jacksonville G.C., and two local players followed her lead and will join her in the event (Hannah Stevens and Tori Mouton).
"In this day and age, with so much changing, maybe it should be more normal for women to play in tournaments that were all men," Ruffels told the Florida-Times Union. "Girls are hitting the ball farther and I think we're under-estimated sometimes, especially in golf. We'll see. I'm excited to go play there."
The three women will play off the men's tees on the near 6,700-yard course. Ruffels will start at 8:30 a.m. ET.
"It is clearly an honor to have the reigning U.S. Women's Amateur titleholder come to Jacksonville and compete in one of North Florida's oldest and most valued championships," the Jacksonville Area Golf Association said in a statement.
