Trojan senior falls in extra hole.
USC senior Allisen Corpuz fell just short of a title after an impressive week at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort, finishing as runner-up at the 118th Women's North and South Amateur Championships on Saturday (July 17).
After being tied through 18 holes, Corpuz dropped the first extra hole to fall to Wake Forest's Rachel Keuhn. Both finalists endured playoffs to reach Saturday afternoon's final. Corpuz had to play 21 before outlasting Ivy Sheperd in Saturday morning's semifinal.
Corpuz is the second straight Trojan to reach the final after her teammate Gabriela Ruffels won the event last year.
Corpuz, who is returning to the squad this fall for a fifth year, played her way through two rounds of stroke play and five rounds of match play at Pinehurst, even battling a storm that caused a delay before the 12th tee in the finals. Corpuz squared the match with a par on No. 17 as Keuhn made bogey. Keuhn ended the match with a par on the first extra hole.
Corpuz added two big victories to her win column on Friday. She followed it up with an appearance in the semifinals on Saturday morning and advanced to the championship match, improving from her quarterfinals finish in 2019.
After an impressive finish at Pinehurst, Corpuz earns an invite from the USGA into this year's U.S. Women's Amateur in Rockville, Md. next month (Aug. 3-9), where she will join a handful of Trojan teammates, including defending champion Ruffels.
