Kyle Hurt Selected in 5th Round of MLB Draft by Miami Marlins
June 11, 2020 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – USC baseball right handed pitcher Kyle Hurt was selected in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft on Thursday by the Miami Marlins.
Hurt becomes USC's 341st MLB Draft selection after being picked 134th overall by the Marlins. The Trojans continue their streak of having a player taken in every MLB draft since 1965, when the draft was instituted.
Hurt had his junior season cut short in 2020, but was on track to have his best year yet as a Trojan. In four starts, he went 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA in 17.0 innings pitched, finishing tied for the team lead with 25 strikeouts while walking just eight batters. Opponents batted just .190 against him and recorded only two extra-base hits on the year. Hurt had one of his best outings of the year in a 2-1 win over No. 21 TCU, giving up one hit and one run, while striking out nine in 6.0 innings.
For his career, Hurt tossed 172.2 total innings, striking out 170 batters and holding opponents to a .227 average. In 2019, Hurt was ninth in the Pac-12 with 81 strikeouts, tossing at least 6.0 innings and giving up two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts. As a freshman in 2018, he led USC with 81.1 innings pitched and had the second best ERA among starters that year. Hurt amassed a total of 30 starts for his Trojan career and made six relief appearances.
The big righty posted one of the most exciting performances on the mound in recent USC memory, when tossed 7.2 innings in a combined no-hitter against Utah in 2018. Hurt struck out seven batters in that game. He threw a career high 8.0 innings against Washington in 2019 and struck out a career best 10 batters in that game as well.
The 2020 MLB Draft was shortened to just five rounds this year amidst the coronavirus pandemic. In addition to USC's 341 draft selections, the Trojans lead all collegiate programs with 114 players to have reached the Major Leagues.
