Standout comes to Trojans after pair of top 5 finishes at Pepperdine as freshman.
Alexa Melton, a prep All-American from Covina, Calif., who posted a pair of collegiate top 5 finishes as a 2019-20 freshman, is transferring to USC, Trojan Women's Golf Head Coach Justin Silverstein announced today.
"We are always looking for ways to improve our roster and we are ecstatic that we were able to do so through the transfer portal with the addition of Alexa Melton," Silverstein said. "Alexa has a long track record of being one of the best amateur golfers in the world and we are excited to get her on campus to help us compete for Pac-12 and NCAA Championships."
As a freshman at Pepperdine, Melton was second on the Waves' squad with a 73.50 stroke average in six tournaments. Included in Golfweek's "Top 10 Freshman to Watch" entering the season, Melton took second at the Golfweek Conference Challenge at 9-under 207 (68-71-68) and tied for fourth at the Dick McGuire Invitational at 6-under 210 (69-68-73) in her collegiate debut.
Melton, who didn't take up golf until she was 12, was selected to play in the 2020 Augusta National Women's Amateur before the event was canceled. She posted a pair of top 36 finishes in the first two events of the spring season before deciding to transfer.
A graduate of South Hills High in Covina who lists former Trojan great Lizette Salas as her biggest golf influence, Melton was the 2018-19 Orange County Register Golfer of the Year and earned AJGA second-team All-American honors as a senior. She tied for second at the 2018-19 CIF State Golf Championship and was third at the Rolex Tournament of Champions.
She won the 2019 SCGA Women's Amateur at Valencia CC at 9-under, the lowest score in relation to par in the tournament's history and tied for third in the Girls Junior PGA Championship. She later won the prestigious Thunderbird International Junior, posting a two-stroke win with two late birdies.
