Trojan freshman fires second 67 in a row, USC now ahead by nine strokes.
Freshman Yuxin Lin, with his second straight 5-under 67, and USC, with a team 5-under, both built sizeable leads despite challenging conditions Monday (March 2) during the second round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at the Southern Highlands G.C. in Las Vegas.
Â
USC, looking for its first win this year and its third in Vegas, combined for a 5-under 283 to pad its lead by four strokes, now at 6-under 570 (287-283). The Trojans lead the field by nine shots with Texas second at 3-over 579 and Florida and Texas Tech tied for third at 7-over 583.
Â
Lin leads the field at 10-under 134 (67-67), five better than Florida's Ricky Castillo. Five others are within seven strokes. The freshman birdied five holes without a bogey and has played his last 35 holes bogey free after a tournament-opening bogey.
Â
Lin won the 2019 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championships in September but has yet to crack the top 10 in a collegiate event. He now has seven rounds in the 60s this year, one off the team lead.
Â
Sophomore Cameron Henry is tied for eighth at 2-under 142 (72-70) after his best two back-to-back rounds of the season. He was 1-over through six holes Monday but turned at par and was 2-under on the back 9. His round today was his second-best of the year behind a season-opening 4-under 68.
Â
Junior Issei Tanabe battled the tough conditions and clawed back from 5-over through 10 to finish at 2-over today and is tied for 14th overall at 1-over 145 (71-74). Following a triple on 10, he birdied 12 and eagled 13 en route to his 2-over.
Â
Junior Leon D'Souza, Troy's top finisher in its last three events, moved into a tie for 47th at 7-over 151 (79-72) thanks to a strong round of par while junior Kaito Onishi is tied for 50th at 8-over 152 (77-75).
Â
Freshman Tyler Guo, playing as an individual, is 82nd at 16-over 160 (83-77).
