Q&A: Head Coach Jason Gill on USC's Baseball Season
March 19, 2020 | Baseball, Features
Head baseball coach Jason Gill caught up with USCTrojans.com and shared his thoughts on the 2020 season, the team's reaction to the cancellation and how the Trojans are moving on.
What were you thoughts on the season after 15 games?
"I'm proud of this group and what we were able to do in 15 games. We were learning and getting better, I really saw improvement after each game."
What was your reaction when you found out the season was canceled?
"My immediate thought was of the players and how they would take it. I've always tried to keep a good perspective on life and the things that are out of my control. I did my best not to overreact and understand that what is going on is bigger than sports."
How did the team take it when you had to break the news to them? What was that meeting like?
"I felt the team handled the news like men. They were quiet and listening to what I had to say. Once the meeting was over we hugged, smiled and some tears were shed. It was really hard, but they understood."
How are you staying connected with your players during this time?
"Right now, I'm just calling to check in once in a while. They're all on spring break and I want to give them some space to digest what they are going through initially. As this situation evolves, I'll be in contact with them more regularly."
What advice did you have for the team as they go into this time of "social distancing"? Did your staff send them home with a workout plan?
"Our strength coach Josh Heidegger was proactive in giving all of our players a way to work out without having to go to a gym. He's the best at what he does and gave them great, viable options. I'm sure he'll be in regular contact with them as well as this progresses. Our guys are dedicated and I'm confident they'll take care of themselves."
What were the takeaways from this past season that can be used heading toward 2021?
"The takeaway I have, is that the standards here at USC have been brought back to a national level of play. That was shown in our last weekend when we beat two top 25 teams. The effort given by this 2020 team will be the standard for teams to follow from here on out."
How are you and your family coping with all of this?
"My family and I are doing what all of us should be in my opinion, we're listening to what the authorities are telling us to do and trying to do our part in putting a swift end to this virus. In terms of what we do every day; movies with popcorn, board games, bike rides, music time, and cooking together. Kacey and I are learning how to homeschool Shane, it's quite an adventure!"
Any other messages for Trojan fans?
"Thank you so much for all of your support. To see Dedeaux Field filled up all weekend in our last series was special for all of us. You have made me, my coaches and our families all feel a part of the Trojan Family in our first year together. We look forward to building off the momentum from the 2020 season, in order to bring you what you deserve, a first-class championship team for you to be proud of.
In closing, please practice social distancing so we can get this country back on its feet.
Fight On!"
