Trojans Come Back For 7-3 Win Over Xavier

LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team fell behind early, but exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to take down Xavier 7-3 at home on Wednesday night.
The win moves the Trojans to 10-5 on the year, while the Musketeers fall to 5-10.
Xavier jumped ahead with three runs in the third, getting couple of early walks and then scoring on an error and a two-run double. A groundout got the Trojans out of the inning.
USC batted around in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and taking advantage of a pair of Xavier errors. Rhylan Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to get the Trojans on the board, and then Ben Ramirez singled home a second run and Clay Owens followed with an RBI groundout. Trevor Halsema broke the 3-3 tie with a two-run single to right, putting USC ahead for good.
Ramirez would hit a solo-home run in the seventh inning and John Thomas sacrificed home the final run of the game, also in the seventh.
Seven different USC pitchers appeared in the game, with Ethan Reed picking up the win. Reed entered to start the top of the fifth and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings. Brian Gursky got the start and threw 2.0 scoreless frames, striking out three of the eight batters he faced. Carson Lambert also tossed 2.0 innings, and three other Trojan arms finished the game with a scoreless inning each.
