March 10, 2020 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – USC baseball's John Beller was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after tossing eight dazzling innings in a victory over No. 2 Vanderbilt last weekend.
Beller led the Trojans to a 2-1 win over the defending national champs, giving USC two victories over Top 25 opponents on the weekend. The Trojans also beat No. 22 TCU on Friday.
The junior lefty gave up a home run on the first pitch of the game and then settled in to shut down the vaunted Commodore attack for the rest of the afternoon, allowing only a bloop single over the course of the next eight innings. He pitched into the ninth and only left after an error allowed the leadoff man to reach.
Beller struck out seven batters and walked two, setting the side down in order in six of the eight innings he pitched. He gave up just the two hits and one run on the day as USC scored in the third and seventh to win the game.
Over his last two starts, Beller has tossed 15.0 innings, giving up six hits and one run, while striking out 13 and walking four. Beller is 3-0 with a 1.12 ERA to lead all Trojan starters this season. Tuesday's honor is the second Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week award of his career and the first this season for any USC player.
The Trojans host Xavier for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and then open Pac-12 play against Washington this weekend.
