Beller Leads Trojans to 3-0 Shutout of Seton Hall
February 29, 2020 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team got seven scoreless innings from John Beller on the mound, and found just enough offense to put away the Seton Hall Pirates to even up the three-game series.
Beller combined with Ethan Hoopingarner and Ben Wanger to scatter five Seton Hall hits and strand seven Pirate baserunners on the day, moving the Trojans' record to 6-3. Seton Hall falls to 4-4 on the year.
USC got on the board with two runs in the second inning for all the offense they would need on the day. Ben Ramirez doubled to lead off the inning and then was driven in when Tyler Pritchard doubled down the line. Preston Hartsell added a sacrifice fly in the inning.
Seton Hall got seven strong innings from their starter Noah Thompson, but never found their offense against the Trojan arms. Thompson struck out three and gave up six hits and one earned run. USC tacked on a third run after Thompson exited, getting an RBI double in the eighth from Jamal O'Guinn.
Beller didn't allow a Pirate runner past first base until the fourth inning when he stranded runners on the corners with a strikeout. The junior lefty again stranded runners on the corners in the sixth. Hoopingarner came in to toss a perfect eighth inning and then Wanger worked around a two-out single to pick up the save in the ninth.
