LOS ANGELES – The USC baseball team gave up four runs in the first inning and never recovered on Friday night, falling 6-3 to Seton Hall in the opener of a three-game set.
USC drops to 5-3 with the loss, while the Pirate improve to 4-3.
Three singles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch put Seton Hall in front early. The Trojans would answer with an RBI single from Ben Wanger in the bottom of the first, but USC left a runner on third to end the inning. The Pirates would add a run in the top of the third when Casey Dana hit a solo-homer. Clay Owens answered that with a solo-shot of his own in the sixth and USC would add a run in the eighth, but the Trojans again left two runners on in the frame.
Isaac Esqueda came on in relief and tossed 4.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run. Esqueda retired the first 13 batters he faced before giving up his lone run in the eighth. Carson Lambert would get the final out of the eighth and Ethan Reed tossed a scoreless ninth.
