USC Sweeps Saint Mary's 4-0 in Home Opener
January 31, 2020 | Women's Tennis, Features
LOS ANGELES--The No. 19 ranked Women of Troy swept the Saint Mary's Gaels 4-0 in their home opener at Marks Stadium on Friday (Jan. 31). USC is now 2-1 overall on the 2020 season.
Doubles action began on the sunny Los Angeles afternoon, and the Trojan pair of Eryn Cayetano/Angela Kulikov sprinted away with their match as they defeated Kozyreva/McIntyre 6-1 on court one. The other two remaining courts battled it out, exchanging games back and forth.
On court three, Trojans Estella Jaeger/Payton Saca began their set at a 1-3 deficit, but in true fight on spirit, fought back to tie up the set at 4-4 with their Gael opponents Hovda/Tevez. After the set was tied again at 5-5, Jaeger/Saca made their final push and claimed the next two games to successfully win the match and nab the doubles point for USC. The Trojans led 1-0 overall.
Freshman Eryn Cayetano continued to be a force to be reckoned with as she swiftly defeated Saint Mary's Danielle McIntyre 6-2, 6-2 on court four. Cayetano has yet to lose a dual match this season (3-0).
Next up, Trojan sophomore Salma Ewing put another point on the board for USC with her victory over Jordan Harris 6-1, 6-4 on court two. Ewing's win pushed USC ahead 3-0 overall.
On court one, No. 60 Angela Kulikov was locked in battle with No. 15 Mariia Kozyreva. The Trojan senior captain came out on top with a 6-4, 6-3 win to clinch the match for the Women of Troy. Just like Cayetano, Kulikov is undefeated in singles in the 2020 dual match season (3-0), and has defeated two opponents ranked higher than her (No. 24 Brianna Shvets – Princeton and No. 15 Mariia Kozyreva –Saint Mary's).
USC returns to Marks Stadium Saturday (Feb. 1) afternoon for a doubleheader. The Women of Troy will challenge UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. PT and then Long Beach State at 3:30 p.m. PT.
