The USC women's cross country team opened the 2019 season by placing 17th at the UC Riverside Invitational (6K) held on the UCR Agricultural Operations Course in Riverside, Calif. today (Sept. 14). Senior Kamryn Weber was the Trojans' top finisher and set her 6K personal best in the race.
"I was actually pleased," said USC cross country coach Patrick Henner. "I thought they executed the first two miles really well. As we go through the season, we have to do that execution at a faster pace. We also have to get stronger mentally and physically in our training so we can push ourselves harder over the last 2K. I think for the first race, they ran together well, they executed the race plan pretty well…we just could have pushed a little harder over the last 2K. Overall, I think it was a good start for us."
Weber led the Trojans with a PR of 22:27.0 to finish 75th overall (63rd in scoring). The Trojans' second runner to finish was sophomore Alyssa Brewer who had a time of 22:53.4 to finish 98th (82nd in scoring). The third Trojan to cross the line was sophomore Jemima Russell who had a PR of 23:31.7 to finish 119th (101st in scoring). Junior Jennifer Daly finished next with a time of 23:39.9 to finish 122nd (104th in scoring) and senior Chloe Berry was the Trojans' final scoring runner with a time of 23:52.8 to finish 127th (107th in scoring).
Freshman Brooke Rodi finished 130th with a time of 23:57.1, sophomore Brynn Sauer was 146th with a PR of 24:38.7 and freshman Abygail Paez was 157th with a time of 26:24.3. It was the first career 6K race for both Rodi and Paez in their Trojan debuts.
