LOS ANGELES – Former All-American pitcher and member of USC baseball's first ever National Championship team in 1948, Wally Hood, was announced as a member of the 2019 National Collegiate Baseball Hall of Fame class.
Hood is one of eight honorees in the 2019 class, joining notable names like college baseball all-time wins leader Mike Martin, Florida A&M's Andre Dawson and Cal State Fullerton's Mark Kotsay. This year's class will be inducted as a part of the College Baseball Night of Champions celebration Nov. 1-2 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Hood played two seasons for the Trojans in 1947 and 48, earning All-American status during the Trojans' run to the 1948 title. He went 21-2 on the mound that year, including a four-hitter against Yale in the opening game of the College World Series. For his career, Hood had a 29-4 record and earned All-Conference honors both seasons.
He would go on to have a brief professional career with the New York Yankees following his all-time great college tenure. Hood passed away in 2001 at the age of 75. He was inducted into the USC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
Hood becomes the fifth player in Trojans history named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame since its inception in 2006. He joins Rod Dedeaux (2006), Fred Lynn (2007), Roy Smalley (2013) and Bill Bordley (2014).
