LOS ANGELES – The United Soccer Coaches released its preseason watch list for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy this week and Trojans Kaylie Collins and Savannah DeMelo were both named to the list.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is awarded each year to the top collegiate player in the nation. A total of 61 players were named to the watch list, with USC being one of 13 schools to have multiple players on it.
Collins, a redshirt-junior goalkeeper, is coming off a 2018 season in which she was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and led USC to a total of 15 shutouts. Collins was named a second-team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches and Top Drawer Soccer, and picked up All-Pac-12 and All-Region first team recognition as well. Her 10 solo-shutouts were the fourth best single season total in program history and were 11th in the country in 2018, and her 0.506 goals against average was ninth-best in the nation.
DeMelo, a junior midfielder, earned herself third-team All-American honors last year as a catalyst in the middle of the pitch for the Trojans. DeMelo posted a total of 28 points in 2018, with 10 assists and nine goals scored, both career-highs for the SoCal native. Her 10 assists were 13th in the country and matched the sixth best single season total in program history, and her 28 points were eighth in the Pac-12. DeMelo was also named to the All-Pac-12 and All-Region first teams. Immediately prior to the 2018 season, DeMelo competed in the U-20 World Cup, starting all three games and scoring a hat trick for the United States.
The watch list will be updated during the season and then semifinalists will be named near the end of the year. Three finalists are then named before the award is given in January. USC has had four semifinalists and one finalist for the trophy in its history. Ally Prisock was a semifinalist last year and Morgan Andrews was a finalist in 2016. Alums Amy Rodriguez (2008) and Kristin Olsen (2009) were also semifinalists for the award.
