Benjamin Wins USATF 400m Hurdles Title, 5 More Trojans Make Team USA For Worlds

Two Trojans advance to finals & 4 to semifinals at the USATF Outdoor Championships
Rai Benjamin won the men's 400m hurdles title and Nia Ali in the women's 100m hurdles, Kendall Ellis in the women's 400m and Michael Norman in the men's 400m all placed second in their events during the third day of action at the 2019 USA Track & Field (USATF) Outdoor Championships held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Ia. today (July 27).   All four athletes, along with Allyson Felix who qualified for the relay pool, made the USA team for the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar from Sept. 27-Oct. 6.

- Benjamin celebrated his birthday by winning the USA 400m hurdles title with a time of 47.23, nearly a second and a half faster than the second-place finisher. The victory also means that Benjamin will make his first USA team and will compete at the World Championships.
- Ali made the USC team by placing second in the women's 100m hurdles final with a season-best time of 12.55 (-1.2). Ali had advanced to the final by winning her semifinal heat with a time of 12.78 (-1.8) earlier in the day. Chanel Brissett placed fifth in her 100m hurdles semifinal with a time of 12.86 (-0.9), just missing advancing to the final as the top four from each heat advanced. The third through fifth spots in her heat were separated by .02 seconds.
- Ellis had a strong stretch run to finish with a season-best time of 50.38 and place second in the women's 400m final. Felix finished sixth in the final with a time of 51.94 and joins Ellis on the World Championship team as she qualifies for the relay pool.Â
- Norman also qualified to represent the U.S. at the World Championships by taking second in the men's 400m final with a time of 43.79. Fred Kerley got out to a lead and was able to hold off a hard-charging Norman for the win with a facility-record and personal-best time of 43.64. Norman also beat the previous facility record of 44.08 set by Kirani James in 2016.
- Anna Cockrell and Dalilah Muhammad both advanced to the women's 400m hurdles final tomorrow. Muhammad won the second heat with a time of 54.22 and Cockrell was fourth in the same heat with a time of 56.51. She qualified on time, seventh overall, and Muhammad had the fastest qualifying time.
- Marquis Morris had a time of 14.05 (-1.9) to take sixth in his 110m hurdles heat and advanced on time to tomorrow's semifinal, 15th overall. Brendan Ames took third in the second heat of the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.01 (-2.0) to automatically advance to the semifinal. His time was third among the qualifiers. Aleec Harris did not finish in the second heat.
- The first Trojan on the track today was Angie Annelus and she won her women's 200m heat with a time of 22.97 (-2.0) to automatically advance to the semifinal tomorrow. Annelus had the third-fastest qualifying time.
- Just'N Thymes was fifth in his men's 200m first-round heat with a time of 20.89 (-2.7). He captured the final non-automatic qualifying spot and his time was 14th overall.
- Alexi Faulknor placed eighth in the women's long jump with a best leap of 21-7.25/6.58m (+2.3w). She took third in the first flight of jumpers and after the second flight was completed, she entered the finals in eighth.
