ONE YEAR OUT: 2020 Tokyo Olympics; Expect Another Strong USC Showing

After all, USC has produced more Olympians, medalists and gold medalists than any school. Since 1904, 453 Trojan athletes have competed in the Games, taking home 144 gold medals (with at least 1 gold in every summer Olympics from 1912), 92 silver and 71 bronze. If USC had competed as its own country, its 307 total medals would rank 14th among all nations (13th in golds). Trojan Olympians have represented 65 countries all-time and competed in 29 sports.
At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janiero, 46 Trojans competed, bringing home 9 gold medals, 5 silver and 7 bronze.
While Olympic teams for the 2020 Games will be assembled at various competitions and trials over the coming months, one former Trojan is already locked in to an Olympic berth. Open water 10K swimmer Haley Anderson, who won a silver medal in the event in London in 2012 and finished fifth in 2016 in Rio, became the first member of the 2020 U.S. Olympic team in any sport. She and teammate Ashley Twichell earned their spots by finishing in the top 10 of the women's 10-kilometer race at the FINA World Championships in mid-July.

In addition to swimming, there likely will be athletes representing USC in sports such as track and field, beach volleyball, indoor volleyball and water polo, among others.
