Katnik Takes 6th In Shot Put, Samuel Advances To 400m Hurdles Final At NCAA T&F Championships

Matthew Katnik placed sixth in the men's shot put to earn All-America honors and Cameron Samuel advanced to the men's 400m hurdles finals during the first day of the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas today (June 5).

Women – Angie Annelus (100m & 200m semifinals), Chanel Brissett (100m hurdles semifinal), Anna Cockrell (100m hurdles and 400m hurdles semifinals), Kyra Constantine (400m – semifinal), Marguax Jones (long jump), Bailey Lear (4x400m), Mecca McGlaston (4x100m-alt.), Kaelin Roberts (4x400m-alt.), TeeTee Terry (100m & 200m semifinals), Lanae-Tava Thomas (100m & 200m semifinals), 4x100m and 4x400m.
- The redshirt junior Katnik placed sixth in the men's shot put with a mark of 64-5.75 (19.65m) to become an outdoor All-American in the event. He also earned indoor All-America status earlier this year by placing seventh in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Katnik opened with a shot put of 63-7 (19.38m), followed by a foul and then his mark of 64-5.75 (19.65m) in the third round. He had the top mark in the first section and advanced to the finals in sixth place. He did not land a legal throw in the finals, but remained sixth and earned USC its first three points in the team championship.
- Sophomore Cameron Samuel had a time of 49.61 to finish third in the second men's 400m hurdles semifinal. He had the top non-automatic qualifying time at that point and would have to await the results of the final heat. After the final semifinal, he still had the top non-automatic qualifying time and was fifth overall, moving on to Friday's final in the event.
- Freshman Ayden Owens opened the 2019 NCAA Championships by winning the decathlon 100m dash with a time of 10.55 (+0.2). He earned 963 points in the event which was contested in a light rain. He took a 55-point lead after one event in the decathlon.
- Owens started with a foul in the first round of the decathlon long jump, then followed that up with a jump of 23-3.75/7.09 (+1.1). He did not improve in his third jump and finished ninth overall in the event to earn 835 points. After two decathlon events, Owens had 1,798 points, good for third place, 80 points behind the leader.
- Owens first attempt in the shot put went for 44-2.75 (13.48m), a slight collegiate PR. He had a foul in his second attempt and a mark of 42-9.75 (13.05m) in the third round. He finished 13th in the event and earned 697 points. After three events in the decathlon, he was in fourth place with 2,495 points.
- Things took a bad turn for Owens in the high jump. He elected to come in at 6-1.25 (1.86m) and missed on all three attempts, narrowly grazing the bar on his final attempt. He received no points in the event and was in 23rd place with 2,495 points after four events, 912 points behind the leader and 644 points out of eighth place, the final scoring position.
- Owens ended Day 1 in the decathlon like he began it with an event win. Owens had a time of 47.10 to finish first in the 400m race and earned 953 points in the event. He finished the first day with 3.448 points and is in 21st place. He is 897 points out of first place and 542 points out of eighth place.
- Redshirt junior Nathan Bultman was the second Trojan to compete on the day when he threw in the second flight of the men's hammer throw. He had fouls in his first two attempts and by the time he lined up for his final throw, it was going to take a big PR of 224-9 just to make the final. He landed a solid throw of 215-10 (65.80m) and finished 18th in the event and earned All-America honorable mention in the event.
- Redshirt senior Marquis Morris was in the first and fastest semifinal heat of the men's 110m hurdles and he posted a time of 13.76 (+0.9) to finish seventh. When the other two semifinals were concluded, Morris finished in 14th place overall to earn second team All-America honors.
- Junior Isaiah Jewett was then next in the last men's 800m semifinal. The two non-automatic qualifying times were 1:46.87 and 1:47.46, so he would need to beat that or finish in the top two of his heat. Jewett made his move with about 150m remaining to move from fifth to first, but Festus Lagat of Iowa State passed him with about 20 meters left and Indiana's Cooper Williamson edged him at the wire by .04 seconds. Jewett finished third in the heat with a time of 1:47.80, seventh overall, but did not advance to the final on Friday.
- Eric Allen Jr. ran in the final men's 200m semifinal and finished eighth with a time of 20.89 (+0.7). He finished 21st overall to earn honorable mention All-America status and had the fastest time among the two qualified freshman at Nationals.
