John Beller Named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week
May 27, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – Trojan lefty John Beller was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week after leading the USC baseball team to a 2-0 series-opening win at then-No. 12 Oregon State this past week.
Beller tossed 7.0 scoreless innings to pick up the first Pac-12 weekly honor of his career. He was making his first start since April 28, picking up his second win of the season in the victory over the defending NCAA champs.
In his seven shutout innings, the sophomore matched his career high with nine strikeouts, gave up just three hits and walked three batters (one intentional). Beller worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third, getting a strikeout and then a popup to end the threat. The lefty would also strand a runner in scoring position in the fifth after a leadoff double and worked around a two-out single in his final inning of work.
Beller narrowly edged teammate Kyle Hurt for the honor, after Hurt also tossed 7.0 scoreless innings against the Beavers, giving up one more hit and the same number of unintentional walks. The Trojan arms led USC to its first series win in Corvallis since 2011 over the weekend.
