USC's Kulikov/Valdes Advance to NCAA Round of 16

Trojans Angela Kulikov and Rianna Valdes won their Round of 32 match at the NCAA Doubles Championships on Tuesday (May 21) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The No. 1 seeded USC duo defeated No. 18 ranked Elyse Hamlin/Kaitlyn McCarthy of Duke 6-1, 6-3.

In the first set, the two pairs were tied at 1-1, until the Women of Troy went on to win the next five games in a row. Duke battled back in the second set to keep a tighter score as the two pairs were neck in neck at 2-2. The Trojans took a 4-2 lead, and the Blue Devils responded by winning the next game to make the score 4-3. This ignited the Trojan tandem, and they went on to win the next two games to secure the second set and claim the match.

No. 1 Kulikov/Valdes will face the winner of No. 15 Rosas/Whittle (Gonzaga) and No. 16 Mikulskyte/Parazinskaite (Kentucky) tomorrow afternoon (May 22).
