Salma Ewing Falls in NCAA First Round

Freshman Salma Ewing wrapped up her 2019 season with a loss in the First Round of the NCAA Singles Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. today (May 21).
In the First Round match, No. 51 ranked Ewing lost 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 to No. 19 ranked Marta Gonzalez of Georgia.
After winning her first set with a decisive 6-1 score, Ewing lost the second set 6-1 to Gonzalez. In the third set, Ewing went up 3-2, but Gonzalez fought back to win three games in a row. After Ewing closed the gap by making the score 4-5, Gonzalez closed out the match by winning the third set 6-4.
Salma Ewing closes out the 2019 season with a 19-13 record in singles. She earned placement on the All-Pac-12 Second Team during her first year at Troy. Ewing's season was highlighted by seven victories over nationally ranked opponents and recording three clinches for the Women of Troy. Ewing played from the No. 1 position all year for USC.
Ewing began the season as the No. 5 ranked Freshman/Newcomer in the nation and her highest held ranking was No. 20 on Nov. 14, 2018.
