April 03, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy scored a win at the No. 5 position from freshmen Laurel Kujan and Hannah Martin
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (16-4) dropped a 4-1 decision to crosstown rival No. 1 UCLA (23-0) at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center courts on Wednesday, April 3. The loss is the sixth in a row to the Bruins as the Trojans fall to 9-8 in the all-time series history.
UCLA claimed the first three points of the dual to sew up the victory before USC got its win at the No. 5 position. In an extended affair, the newly-formed freshman duo of Laurel Kujan and Hannah Martin fought back after dropping their first set, 24-22, to Izzy Carey and Lindsey Sparks and came back to win, 31-29, in the second set; and 15-12 in the third.
Earlier, at the No. 4 position, Lea Monkhouse and Savvy Simo claimed a 21-12, 21-14 win over junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser. The Bruins went up, 2-0, with their win at the No. 2 spot. There, Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil defeated senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater, 21-18, 21-15.
UCLA put the dual on ice when the Bruins won at the No. 1 position. Megan and Nicole McNamara posted a 21-10, 21-19 win over senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina, to snap the Trojan pair's seven-match winning streak.
The Women of Troy suffered their first-ever 4-1 loss to the Bruins when Zana Muno and Abby Van Winkle completed a pair of deuce-point wins at the No. 3 position over sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto, 23-21, 25-23.
Up next, the Women of Troy head to The Farm for the Pac-12 North Invitational. USC faces No. 12 California and host No. 19 Stanford on Saturday (April 6) at the Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium and then has a rematch with UCLA before closing the tournament with a meeting against Washington on Sunday (April 7).
