April 25, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy won their ninth straight dual on a 3-0 sweep of the Huskies at the Pac-12 Championship
LOS ANGELES – The second-seeded USC beach volleyball team (25-4) won its ninth straight dual and kicked off the Pac-12 championship weekend with a 3-0 win over seventh-seeded Washington (8-15) at Merle Norman Stadium on Thursday, April 25.
The victory improved the Trojans to 5-0 over the Huskies all-time and to 8-1 on home sand in 2019. The Women of Troy also went to 12-3 in Pac-12 tournament matches and to 5-0 when those matches are played at home.
The Trojans scored the first dual point from the No. 5 position where junior Cammie Dorn and freshman Mollie Ebertin put together a 21-19, 21-18 win over Chloe Newton and Callie Weber. One spot up, junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser completed a three-set win, 19-21, 21-11, 15-13, over Emma Calle and Samantha Drechsel for their sixth straight victory and a 2-0 USC lead.
The dual's clinching point came from the Trojan duo of senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina. The top pair made short work of Kristen Gengenbacher and Destiny Julye in a 21-12, 21-12 victory to seal the deal. The win was the tandem's ninth in a row and improved their all-time record to 58-4.
The remaining matches were suspended following the dual's decision. At the No. 3 position, sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto took a 21-19 win over Cat McCoy and Avie Niece in the first set and led, 14-12, at the time of suspension. At the No. 2 spot, senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater won their first set, 21-15, over Kara Bajema and Shayne McPherson, but trailed, 16-15, in the second frame.
Up next, the Trojans face sixth-seeded Arizona State (20-12) at 10:30 a.m. PT on Friday (April 26). The Sun Devils upset third-seeded California, 3-2, earlier in the day. The dual, and all duals at the Pac-12 Championship, will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks.
