USC Women's Tennis Beats Arizona State 4-3

The USC women's tennis team had a hard fought battle in Tempe, Ariz. today (March 9) and defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 4-3. The Trojans improved their record to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 conference play.

The Trojans claimed the first win of the day as Weissmann/Willson swiftly defeated ASU's Kolarova/Slaysman 6-0 on court two. The Sun Devil pair No. 6 John-Baptiste/Hattingh beat USC's No. 13 Kulikov/Valdes 6-2 on court one to tie up the score. Arizona State would have the final word in doubles as Alicea/Hampton beat USC's Branstine/Jaeger in a close match with a 7-6 (5) final score to claim the doubles point.

USC entered singles at a 0-1 deficit and that fired up the Women of Troy to battle back. Trojan No. 84 Angela Kulikov did just that when she beat ASU's Tereza Kolarova 6-1, 6-0 on court three to even out the overall score at 1-1.

On court six, USC's No. 118 Danielle Willson defeated Sun Devil Samantha Alicea 6-3, 6-2. This win extends Willson's winning streak to 11 victories, and she remains undefeated in dual matches (10-0).

Arizona State responded with a win of their own as Lauryn John-Baptiste beat USC's Rianna Valdes 6-2, 6-2 on court two. Up next, Sun Devil Savannah Slayman beat Trojan Becca Weissmann 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 on court five to push ASU ahead 3-2.

On court one, USC's No. 45 Salma Ewing beat ASU's Ilze Hattingh 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 to keep the Trojans in the match.

All eyes moved to court four where the outcome would decide the winner of the match. After losing the first set 5-7, USC's No. 120 Ana Neffa came back to beat ASU's Sammi Hampton 7-6 (8), 6-4 in the final two sets to clinch the match for the Women of Troy.

Next weekend, USC travels to Indian Wells, Calif. to take on Baylor in the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Tennis Challenge on Saturday (March 16).Â
