Katnik places 7th in shot put; Nine women advance to finals
Matthew Katnik placed seventh in the men's shot put, Ayden Owens stands ninth in the men's heptathlon and nine Trojan women and Isaiah Jewett in the men's 800m advanced to event finals during the first day of action at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships being held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. today (March 8). USC's men have two points after day one and are tied for 21st, while the women's team did not score on the first day in its only opportunity.
- Redshirt junior Matthew Katnik took seventh in the men's shot put with a season-best mark of 64-7.25/19.69m in his first attempt of the day. That throw was just two and a half inches off his PR which he set two seasons ago and which ranks second on USC's all-time list. Katnik earned USC its first two points of the meet.
- Freshman Ayden Owens finished the first day in the men's heptathlon in ninth place with 3,210 points, just 88 points out of fifth place. Owens had season bests or tied a season best in all four events. First he won the 60m dash with a time of 6.75 to earn 973 points. Then he placed 13th in the long jump with a best leap of 22-9.25/6.94m to earn 799 points. Next he took seventh in the shot put with a mark of 45-3.00/13.79m for 715 points. Finally, he closed his day by placing 13th in the high jump with a clearance of 6-3.25/1.91m for 723 points. Tomorrow he will compete in the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run.
- Things couldn't have gone much better in the women's 60m hurdles as sophomore Chanel Brissett, redshirt senior Dior Hall, junior Anna Cockrell and junior Mecca McGlaston all advanced to tomorrow's final. Brissett was second in the first heat and overall with a time of 7.93 (.005 behind the top qualifier), Hall was third in the first heat and fourth overall with a season-best time of 7.96, Cockrell was second in the second heat and fifth overall with a season-best time of 7.98 and McGlaston was fourth in the first heat and seventh overall with a PR of 8.00. McGlaston moved from seventh to fifth on USC's all-time list which means after Virginia (Powell) Crawford who holds the school indoor record, it goes Brissett second, Cockrell third, Hall fourth and McGlaston fifth.
- Sophomore Kaelin Roberts had a PR of 52.01 to win the third heat and qualify first to tomorrow's final. Roberts moved from fourth to second on USC's indoor list. Junior Kyra Constantine was second in the second heat and fourth overall to advance to the final with a time of 52.89.
- Sophomore TeeTee Terry was next and she qualified on time to the women's 60m final with a time of 7.26. She was third in the first heat and seventh overall among the qualifiers, .002 out of sixth.
- Freshman Brendon Stewart was not as fortunate in the men's 60m dash, running 6.67 to finish 14th overall.
- Junior Isaiah Jewett then advanced automatically to the men's 800m final by placing third in the second prelim heat with a time of 1:49.24. He had the ninth-fastest qualifying time, as his prelim went slower and all three runners came in between 1:49.15 and 1:49.24.
- Freshman Lanae-Tava Thomas had a time of 23.01 to place first in her heat and qualify fourth overall in the 200m dash and sophomore Lauren Rain Williams had a time of 23.22 to take third in her prelim and qualify eighth overall. The women's team had its first setback as junior Angie Annelus finished 13th overall with a time of 23.46 and did not advance to tomorrow's final.
- Senior Margaux Jones then placed 11th in the women's long jump with a best leap of 19-11.00/6.07m. Her other two attempts went for 19-3.50/5.88m.
