No. 2 USC Beach Knocks Off No. 15 Hatters

The Women of Troy have won five straight duals
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (6-1) defeated No. 15 Stetson (5-3) by a 4-1 count to extend its winning streak to five straight duals on Thursday, March 7, at Merle Norman Stadium.
The Trojans improved to 6-0 against the Hatters as the two teams met in a non-neutral location for the first time in the series' history.
USC scored the first point of the dual with a 21-19, 21-19 win at the No. 3 position. There, sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto earned their seventh straight victory by defeating Ana Costa and Rachel Noble. The Hatters equalized with a win at the bottom of the lineup where Quinci Birker and Rebecca Ingram defeated USC's duo of junior Cammie Dorn and freshman Mollie Ebertin, 21-19, 21-18.
The Trojans went in front again with a win from the top court. Senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina completed a 21-12, 21-15 match over Sunniva Helland-Hansen and Carly Perales for their seventh consecutive victory. The clinching point came from the second court as senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater turned in a 21-12, 21-18 win over Darby Dunn and Sammee Thomas.
With the dual decided, the Trojans tacked on a fourth point from the No. 4 position. Junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser took a 21-13 win over Samantha Harris and Julie Varga in the first set, but found themselves down, 11-3, in the second. A furious comeback gave the USC tandem the lead en route to a 23-21 finish.
Up next, the Trojans head to Manhattan Beach, Calif., for the 2019 East Meets West Invitational. They take on No. 9 Florida International (4-0) on Saturday (March 9) at 8:30 a.m. PT followed by a 1:30 p.m. dual against No. 19 TCU (5-3). USC plays No. 6 Louisiana State (6-2) on Sunday, March 10, at 10 a.m. and then conclude the tourney with a rematch against No. 4 Florida State.
