Meet Josannah Vazquez, a sophomore for the USC beach volleyball team. This spring, the Women of Troy added five newcomers to a squad of seasoned veterans who have their sights set on the school's fourth national championship on the sand. Get to know each of the newcomers a little better.

How are you liking USC so far?
I'm loving it. It's honestly a dream come true.

How did you decide that you wanted to come here?
I always kind of knew in the back of my mind that I wanted to go to a big school, just to be in that kind of an atmosphere–big sports, really good academics. So when Anna was like, "hey, I want you," it kind of just fit. It was just what I always wanted.

What was the biggest adjustment after coming to LA from Texas?
I think just being away from my family. I'm really close with all of them, but I always knew that I wanted to branch out and travel, so missing them has probably been the biggest thing.

Have you gotten the chance to explore LA?
Oh, definitely. Since I've been here a year already–I was in Long Beach last year, at a junior college, so I really got to explore all of South LA and Orange County. I came up here a few times, so yeah, I've definitely figured out my way around.

Do you have a favorite place in town to go?
My favorite place is Huntington Beach. Right by the pier, watching the surfers and stuff, and just sitting there and watching everybody, everything happen. I don't surf, but I like watching them because they do it a whole lot better than I do.

What kind of hobbies do you have outside of playing volleyball?
I like reading… oddly enough, my favorite genre is fantasy/romance. The really, kind of corny, teen romances, I used to read those a lot in high school. I don't read them as much now, just because of time, but definitely Cassandra Clare. The Shadowhunters series is one of my favorites; and just books like that.

As a major in Human Biology, what interests you about that field?
Well, it's the closest thing USC has to a kinesiology or exercise science undergraduate program, and so that's why I'm taking it because I want to study to be a strength coach.

What are you most looking forward to this season?
Just competing, having fun with my teammates, and experiencing this new level. Because I've never really played at this level before, I'm looking forward to all these new experiences that come with it.
