The Women of Troy dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 10 South Carolina but beat No. 18 Georgia State, 4-1, in Atlanta
ATLANTA – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (11-2) had its nine-match winning streak snapped by No. 10 South Carolina (6-5) in a 3-2 loss, but rebounded to take a 4-1 win over No. 18 Georgia State (8-5) at the GSU Beach Volleyball Complex on Tuesday, March 12.
The Gamecocks join a short list of now just eight teams to have ever beaten the Women of Troy. The Trojans had fewer than 40 hours between duals that had concluded on Sunday evening in Manhattan Beach, but fought toe-to-toe with South Carolina despite the circumstances. USC improved to 4-0 all-time over GSU and played its first-ever matches in the Peach State.
South Carolina fired the first shot with a win at the No. 5 position. There, Whitley Ballard and Caroline Skaff claimed a 21-18, 21-15 victory over freshman Mollie Ebertin and sophomore Maja Kaiser. The Trojans knew they were in for a dogfight when they went down, 2-0, following a three-set win for the Gamecocks at court four.
USC's junior duo of Joy Dennis and Cammie Dorn claimed a 21-16 win over Hanna Edleman and Jess Vastine in the first set, but the Gamecocks turned the tables and won, 22-20, in the second. South Carolina's upstart duo claimed an early lead in the third, but the Trojans fought back and went back and forth until the Gamecocks scored a 25-23 win in the third.
Into the top of the lineup, the Trojans got on the board with a win at the No. 2 position where senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater completed a 21-14, 21-15 win over Lydia Dimke and Katie Smith. At the No. 3 spot, sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto played their sixth three-setter of the season but emerged with a 25-23, 16-21, 15-8 win over Franky Harrison and Carly Schnieder to even the dual at two points apiece.
At the top court, senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina dropped their first set, 21-19, to Cadie Bates and Shannon Williams, but fought back to take a 21-14 win in the second. They went back and forth with the Gamecocks but eventually fell, 15-12, to have their 11-match winning streak snapped. The loss also sealed the dual, 3-2, for South Carolina.
In a non-scoring exhibition match, freshmen Laurel Kujan and Karina Myszkowski took down Quinn Fulton and Lauryn Gillis in straight sets, 21-19, 21-19.
With no rest between the duals, USC went straight to work against the Panthers. GSU got its first and only dual point with a win at the No. 5 position as Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham defeated Ebertin and Kaiser, 21-19, 21-14. In a first-time pairing at the fourth court, Dennis teamed with freshman Hannah Martin to earn a three-set win, 15-21, 21-19, 15-11 over Kelly Dorn and Ashley McGinn.
Even at one-all in the dual, the Trojans' top three courts sealed the victory for the Women of Troy. First, Bustamante and Graudina turned in a 21-12, 21-8 win at the No. 1 spot over Eden Hawes and Georgia Johnson. For Bustamante, it was her 100th-career individual victory and makes her just the seventh Trojan to reach that milestone.
At the No. 3 spot, Hallgren and Poletto remained unscathed and moved to 13-0 on the season with a win over Kate Novack and Brooke Weiner, 21-19, 21-18, to deal the clinching point in the dual. At the No. 2 spot, Cannon and Slater needed three sets, but completed a 17-21, 21-17, 15-9 victory over Maddy Delmonte and Olivia Stasevich for the 4-1 win. It was Cannon's 99th-career individual victory.
In a non-scoring exhibition match, Georgia State's Bekah Brodbeck and Bailey Hatchett defeated Myszkowski and sophomore Josannah Vazquez, 19-21, 22-20, 15-6.
The Trojans now travel southward to take on No. 16 Florida Atlantic and No. 8 Florida International at the FIU Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Friday, March 15.
