USC Women Place Second At Indoor NCAAs, Win The Most (3) Individual Titles
March 10, 2019 | Track & Field, Features
Young men's squad places 17th, Sears is 4th in HJ
Chanel Brissett in the 60m hurdles, Kaelin Roberts in the 400m and TeeTee Terry in the 60m all won titles to help lead the USC women's team to a second-place finish, while Earnest Sears III placed fourth in the men's high jump to help lead the Trojan men's team to a 17th place finish at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships being held at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. today (March 9).  USC's women scored 51 points and the men's team scored 12 points in the two-day event.  The USC women's three individual titles in the 17 events were more than any other school and only two other teams had two individual champions.
"Wow, what a day…is all I can say," said USC Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert. "I am so excited about this young team and the show they put on. Anna Cockrell's hamstring tightened up in the hurdle prelims yesterday so we decided not to chance her getting injured and jeopardizing her outdoor season. Even without her, we were able to capitalize on all of our scoring opportunities and earn second place. My hat goes off to Mecca McGlaston who had a huge fall in the warm-up when someone inadvertently moved a hurdle into her lane. She was able to compose herself and get two points for the team. Kaelin Roberts executes her race pattern with precision and was able to get the win. TeeTee Terry ran a phenomenal 60 final out of lane 1. She eliminated the demons from the false start at MPSFs and PR'd to win. Lauren Rain Williams just started training in December, so earning her first individual NCAA All-America honor was nice to watch. Lanae-Tava Thomas ran only her third 200 of the season to earn fourth. Dior Hall earned another All-America honor and Kyra Constantine's third-place finish in the 400 helped put us in the lead.
"Our men's team is very young and I was proud of how they competed," added Smith Gilbert. "Ayden Owens took sixth in the heptathlon which is no easy feat for a freshman and we are excited about his future. Earnest Sears had another impressive meet to take fourth in the high jump and earn his second All-America honor. It was nice to have Matthew Katnik back after sitting out the 2018 season and he picked up his first All-America honor in the shot put. And junior Isaiah Jewett has been a great addition to this year's team and it was good to see him score in the 800m, for his first All-America honor.
