USC Women's Tennis Falls to SMU 4-3

After riding a three-match winning streak, the USC women's tennis team lost to Southern Methodist 4-3 on Saturday (Feb. 9) in College Station, Texas. With the loss, USC is now 3-1 on the season.
The Mustangs struck first as Kulicke/Perez-Lopez defeated USC's Ewing/Jaeger 6-2 on court two. SMU would claim the doubles point when Mustang duo Hollebeck/Traxler beat the Trojan pair of Weissmann/Branstine 6-4.
The Trojans entered singles at a 0-1 deficit. USC came out swinging in singles as No. 86 Danielle Willson took down SMU's Karina Traxler 6-4, 6-3 on court four. Becca Weissmann followed suit by beating Mustang Ana Perez-Lopez 7-5, 6-1 on court three. The Mustangs responded as Anzhelika Shapovalova defeated USC's Rianna Valdes 6-1, 6-0 on court five.
With the match now tied at 2-2, USC's Constance Branstine was determined to put another point on the board. Branstine defeated SMU's Nicole Petchey 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 on court six.
SMU battled back on court two as Mustang Vivienne Kulicke beat USC's Angela Kulikov 7-6 (3), 6-3 to tie up the overall score at 3-3.
The match outcome would be determined by the results on court one. In a close match, USC's No. 20 Salma Ewing fell to SMU's Liza Buss 6-3, 7-6 (3) that clinched the overall match for the Mustangs.
USC takes on Texas A&M tomorrow (Feb. 10) at 9:30 a.m. in College Station, Texas for the second match of their road trip.
