USC Celebrates National Girls & Women In Sports Day
February 06, 2019 | Trojan Outreach, Features
Today — Feb. 6, 2019 — marks the 33rd annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, a national observance celebrating the achievements of women and girls in the sports world.
Since its inception, USC's Trojan Outreach program has done much to encourage young girls to participate in sports. Trojan Outreach has also empowered USC's female-student athletes to use their platforms for good and mentor local children through sports.
Trojan Outreach has partnered with the City of Los Angeles' Department of Recreation to enhance the Girls Play Los Angeles (GPLA) program over the last few years. The GPLA program, an initiative that Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is very passionate about, aims to get girls involved in sports in order to stay healthy, build self-esteem, make friends, have fun and break down economic and cultural barriers.
In May of 2018, members of USC's women's basketball and volleyball teams volunteered to coach approximately 500 local girls in a number of different sports, including hockey, softball, rock climbing and more. That day, USC women's basketball alum and Olympic gold medal winner Tina Thompson also encouraged the girls to try new sports and take on leadership roles.
For the last few years, Trojan Outreach has also put on a special Christmas event in partnership with Girls Play LA. In 2017, the event involved a free screening of the film Hidden Figures, which highlights the accomplishments of three black female mathematicians who worked for NASA. After the movie, the girls in attendance received gift bags from the women's basketball team and watched the team play at USC's Galen Center. In 2018, the attendees enjoyed a free boxing class intended to tackle anxiety, depression and trauma before getting presents and watching the women's basketball team play.
To honor USC's consistent commitment to supporting girls in sports, Mayor Garcetti recently awarded McCall Hall, USC's director of Trojan Outreach, with a certificate of recognition.
