December 06, 2019 | Baseball, Features
LOS ANGELES – The 2020 USC baseball schedule was released this week, with the Trojans slated to host a number of high-profile opponents this year, including the reigning NCAA Champion Vanderbilt Commodores.
The Trojans begin their first season under new head coach Jason Gill on February 14 with a three-game series at home against Western Michigan. Of USC's first 19 games, 15 are at home. Overall, the regular season slate features 31 home games, 21 road games, two neutral site games and two home exhibitions (including the Alumni Game on Jan. 25).
Non-Conference Highlights
The Trojans non-conference schedule is highlighted by two early-season tournaments, including the Southern California College Baseball Classic and the Tony Gwynn Classic.
The Southern California College Baseball Classic was formerly known as the Dodger Stadium Classic, but due to renovations at Dodger Stadium, the event will be hosted on the USC and UCLA campuses. TCU and Vanderbilt will be the two opponents this year. USC hosts TCU on March 6 and Vanderbilt on March 7, and then the Trojans will host all four teams on Sunday, March 8. TCU and Vanderbilt will open the Sunday matchups and then USC and UCLA will face off at 3 p.m.
The Trojans head to San Diego for the Tony Gwynn Classic the second week of the season (Feb. 21-23), facing Seattle, Southern Illinois and tournament host San Diego State.
The Trojans play the aforementioned season-opening non-conference series at home against Western Michigan (Feb. 14-16) and also host Seton Hall (Feb. 28-March 1) for a three-game set. USC has midweek non-conference games against Cal State Fullerton (A-Feb. 25, H-April 21), Xavier (H-March 10), Pepperdine (A-March 17), UC Irvine (H-March 3, A-March 31), Long Beach State (A-March 24), Grand Canyon (H-April 29) and CSUN (H-May 19). The Trojans also have an alternating three-game series against Long Beach State April 9-11, with the Thursday and Saturday games at USC, and the Friday night game in Long Beach.
Pac-12 Slate
The Trojans open Pac-12 play at home with a three-game series against Washington (March 13-15). USC also plays host to Arizona (March 27-29), Cal (April 24-26), Oregon State (May 8-10) and Utah (May 15-17) this season.
The regular season ends with the annual crosstown showdown at UCLA on May 21-23. The Trojans also travel to Oregon (March 20-22), Washington State (April 3-5), Stanford (April 17-19) and Arizona State (May 1-3).
Alumni Game/Exhibition
The first chance fans will have to see the Trojans in the new year will be the Jan. 25 Alumni Game at Dedeaux Field. That game will be free and open to the public, and will feature the 2020 Trojans facing off against recent alums in the afternoon, as well as an "old-timers game" starting at noon.
The Trojans also host Keio University from Japan on Feb. 26 for an exhibition contest at Dedeaux Field.
Strength of Schedule
Including defending national champs Vanderbilt, USC faces seven teams that made it to the 2019 postseason (TCU, Stanford, Cal, Oregon State, Arizona State and UCLA). Four Trojan opponents finished last year in the Top 25 (Vanderbilt-No. 1, UCLA-No. 8, Stanford-No. 10, Oregon State-No. 23) and two others were receiving votes at the end of the year (Arizona State, Cal). Of the Trojans' 24 opponents, 13 finished with records better than .500.
Still to Come
The 2019 broadcast schedule for the Pac-12 Network will be released later this month. Tickets will also be on sale in the near future. Several game times will be finalized once the broadcast schedule is announced, as will broadcast details for the USC home games not being televised on the Pac-12 Network.
A New Era
The Trojans enter a new era under Head Coach Jason Gill this season. Gill was hired this past June to take over the program after three straight sub-.500 seasons. Along with his more than two decades of coaching experience, Gill brought in pitching coach Ted Silva from Nebraska and volunteer assistant Bobby Andrews from LMU. He also retained long-time Trojan assistant Gabe Alvarez as the team's hitting coach and recruiting coordinator.
USC last made the postseason in 2015 and finished last year 25-29-1.
