USC Scores 15th Straight NCAA Appearance
November 24, 2019 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Defending champs will head to Stockton to set up for NCAA action.
USC men's water polo will set up defense of its 2018 NCAA championship in Stockton this year, marking the Trojans' 15th consecutive NCAA appearance. At 14-5 overall after a resounding win over rival UCLA in the MPSF third-place match today (Nov. 24), USC is through to the 2019 National Collegiate Men's Water Polo Championships, hosted by Pacific Dec. 5-9. The NCAA released the bracket tonight (Nov. 24) on ncaa.com.
USC will open up in the quarterfinals this year, facing either Harvard or Bucknell at 1 p.m. on Dec. 5. A win there would get USC a spot in the semifinals against Stanford at 5 p.m. on Dec. 8 in what would be a rematch of last year's national championship game. The Trojans are eyeing a 15th straight trip to the NCAA final, where they'd be aiming to claim an 11th national championship.
Under the direction of first-year head coach and longtime USC leader Marko Pintaric, the Trojans earned the top seed for the MPSF Tournament with wins over then-No. 1 Stanford and then-No. 1 UCLA as well as Cal during MPSF action. Three Trojans have broken the 100 career goal barrier this season, with seniors Marin Dasic and Sam Slobodien and junior Jacob Mercep all joining the century club. Mercep is USC's top scorer on the year with 49 goals, followed by Dasic with 39 and sophomores Hannes Daube at 33 and Jake Ehrhardt with 30. Sophomore goalie Nic Porter has manned the cage with authority, making 12 saves in the recent win over UCLA to bump his average up to 10.88 saves per game in his second season at USC.
