Six Trojans Secure All-MPSF Accolades
November 20, 2019 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Hannes Daube and Jacob Mercep lead the pack with First Team honors.
The 2019 All-MPSF honor roll was unveiled today (Nov. 20) with six Trojans peppering the all-conference team lists. Headlined by back-to-back All-MPSF First Team honorees Hannes Daube and Jacob Mercep, USC senior captain Matt Maier has secured his fourth all-MPSF nod with Honorable Mention alongside fellow senior and first-time pick Sam Slobodien. Now a three-time honoree, senior Marin Dasic is on the All-MPSF Second Team, joined by first-time selection in sophomore Jake Ehrhardt. The Trojans are the top-seeded team heading into this weekend's MPSF Tournament, starting up with a semifinal slot on Saturday (Nov. 23) in Berkeley, Calif., and with eyes on Sunday's title match as USC hunts down a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the 15th consecutive year.
A sophomore, Hannes Daube is fresh off a four-goal outburst in a key USC victory at Cal last weekend. He's up to 30 goals on the year, giving him a career count of 88 as a Trojan as the 2018 All-American hits his stride in his sophomore season. It's Daube's second selection to the All-MPSF First Team. So, too, is USC junior Jacob Mercep on the All-MPSF First Team list for the second straight season. Also a 2018 All-American, Mercep has punched up 38 goals in his second season at USC, recently tallying his 100th career goal as a Trojan in that win over the weekend at Cal.
An All-MPSF Honorable Mention recipient as a freshman and junior, senior captain Marin Dasic has upgraded his status with a spot on the All-MPSF Second Team this year. A two-time All-American, he is USC's second leading scorer on the year with 36 goals, and is long past cracking the 100-goal barrier as he now grips 128 career goals as a Trojan to rank No. 22 all-time at USC. He's joined on the All-MPSF Second Team this season by sophomore Jake Ehrhardt — scorer of the game-winner at Cal last weekend and fourth on the team this year with 25 goals to date. It's Ehrhardt's first major honor as a Trojan.
Senior Matt Maier has been a mainstay on the All-MPSF honor roll for four years now. A Second Team pick last year, Maier now has his third All-MPSF Honorable Mention in-hand. The captain has punched up 14 goals this season to hold 97 in his USC career so far. Just a step ahead of him in the scoring charts is fellow senior captain Sam Slobodien, who has scored 23 goals this year to boast 98 in his USC career. An All-American last year, this is Slobodien's first All-MPSF accolades.
The Trojans set off for Berkeley this week to await their semifinal opponent for that 11 a.m. game on Saturday (Nov. 23). On Sunday (Nov. 24), the MPSF third-place game is set for 1 p.m. and the championship game — where the automatic berth for the NCAA Tournament goes up for grabs — follows at 3 p.m.
