October 08, 2019 | Women's Soccer, Features
LOS ANGELES – After a 2-0 week on the road in Arizona for the USC women's soccer team, a pair of Trojans picked up Pac-12 weekly honors, with Anna Smith being named Goalkeeper of the Week and Kaylin Martin Defender of the Week.
USC picked up a 2-1 win to open the trip at Arizona State, getting the game-winning goal from Martin and a game-saving PK stop from Smith, and then shut out Arizona 2-0 behind contributions from the two on Sunday. The pair helped the Trojans move to 9-1-1 overall on the year and 2-1-0 in Pac-12 play.
Martin scored the game-winner against the Sun Devils with 35 seconds left in the contest, heading in a corner kick for her first career goal. She followed that up with her first career assist against Arizona, when she sent a long ball forward for Tara McKeown, who scored the lone goal of the 1-0 victory. Martin played the full 90 minutes on the backline of both games, helping USC to its fifth shutout of the year against the Wildcats.
Smith notched the game-saving stop on the PK against Arizona State with 21 seconds remaining in the contest, preserving the 2-1 victory. She then made four saves against Arizona for her third career shutout in goal. Since taking over the goalkeeper spot for USC, Smith is 7-1-1 with 40 saves.
The Trojans are back in action at home this week, facing Utah on Thursday at 3 p.m. and Colorado on Sunday at 1 p.m.
