No. 5 USC Gets Revenge With 10-9 Win At No. 4 UC Santa Barbara
October 06, 2019 | Men's Water Polo, Features
Jake Ehrhardt nets the game-winner in the fourth while defense holds tight to close out the road victory for the Trojans.
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. — The No. 5 USC men's water polo team found vengeance on the road, issuing some payback for an early and rare loss to UC Santa Barbara by upending the No. 4 Gauchos 10-9 today at Campus Pool in Santa Barbara, Calif. Now with four straight wins under their caps, the Trojans improve to 9-2 on the year.
The teams fought through seven ties before USC got the late leg up on a blast from Jake Ehrhardt early in the fourth, which would stand as the winner as USC's 10th goal of the game. Defense would hold out the rest of the way as goalie Nic Porter collected a few more key saves to finish up with 10 stops on the day.
The Trojans were trailing 8-7 midway through the third quarter before Sam Slobodien rocked in an equalizer to snarl it up 8-8 a minute away from the fourth. To kick off that final frame, Jacob Mercep whistled in his third goal of the game, and USC was up 9-8 before the eighth lockup of the game came with 7:11 to go. That's when Ehrhardt pounced on his opportunity during USC's next possession, inking his second goal of the day as the game-winner.
USC had jumped out to a two-goal lead with blasts from Hannes Daube and Matt Maier to open the game, only to see the host fire right back. Mercep would cap the first frame with back-to-back goals for a 4-2 USC advantage after eight minutes of work. But the Gauchos rattled in three straight scores to start the second, putting USC in a 5-4 hold. Marin Dasic would pull things even by halftime, leaving it as a 5-5 lockup at the break. The see-saw battle continued in the third, with UCSB going up 6-5. Ehrhardt and Luka Karaman zipped in Trojan goals next for a lift to a 7-6 advantage, but it was snarled up again 8-8 entering the fourth, where USC would get the job taken care of for the final 10-9 victory.
USC's next action takes the Trojans back on the road to Pacific, where USC looks to avenge its only other loss of the year. The Trojans face the Tigers at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 12) in Stockton, Calif.
