USC Men And Women Engage In Exhibition Action At Australian Open
January 20, 2019 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis, Features
Trojans faced Tennis Australia players today and will play a dual match vs. South Carolina tomorrow in Melbourne on ESPN3.
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA — The USC men's and women's tennis teams had the great honor of competing on the courts of the Australian Open today in Melbourne, Australia, with members of both teams engaging in exhibition action against players from Tennis Australia. USC swept doubles competition and grabbed six singles wins out of eight matches played.
Tomorrow, both USC teams will become a part of history as they take part in the first-ever official collegiate matches to be played at the Open, with the Trojans and Women of Troy going up against the South Carolina men and women at 4 p.m. PT on Jan. 21. The USC-South Carolina matches will be streamed live on ESPN3/WatchESPN.
In today's exhibition showdown with the Aussies, USC's doubles game was strong. For the women it was Alexa Corcoleotes and Sydney Van Alphen who hit the finish line first, dishing out a smooth and decisive 6-1 win over their Australian opponents. Next, it was the USC men's pairing of Mor Bulis and Riley Smith. Bulis saw his first action as a Trojan in the exhibition match, and combined forces with Smith for a 6-4 win over the Aussies. The next two doubles matches tightened up significantly — both going to tiebreakers, where the Trojans took control. Jake Devine and Bradley Frye stood their ground and fended off the Aussies to claim a 7-6 (4) win after some strong serving in the breaker. The last doubles match going saw a staunch effort from USC's Becca Weissmann and Danielle Willson, who stormed to a 7-6 (2) victory over the Aussies to make it a clean doubles sweep for the USC contingent.
Women's singles saw all four Trojans in action at once, and the Women of Troy divided and conquered in their first singles action at the Open. Danielle Willson breezed to victory, drumming up a swift 6-1, 6-1 win to make it a perfect day for her on the Aussie Open courts. Next, Becca Weissmann secured a 6-1, 4-2 victory when her opponent retired to also round out a winning day in Melbourne. Moments later, USC newcomer Ana Neffa cleaned up a 6-4, 6-3 win in her first action as a Trojan. Sydney Van Alphen would have her hands full with her Aussie opponent, taking a 6-2, 6-1 in exhibition singles play today.
On the men's side, Riley Smith rolled up a 6-2, 6-3 win to keep his winning momentum going. Bulis, meanwhile, had his hands full with Australia's Bourchier, who fought back from Bulis' first-set tiebreaker win to claim a breaker of his own in the second set to force a third. There, the Aussie got a late break to hand out a loss to USC's Bulis — 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-5. That left two Trojans each up a set on their Aussie opponents. Freshman Frye held his ground in the second set and pinned up some impressive points to close out a winning day with his 6-3, 7-5 win over Polmans, leaving just DeVine going strong in the Aussie sun for the final match. He'd surrender the second but came back and snagged a late break to pocket the 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory that ended a successful day of play at the Aussie Open for Trojan tennis.
Both the USC men and women now turn to kick off their 2019 campaigns with their first dual match of the year. The Trojan tennis teams will take on South Carolina's teams on-site at the Australian Open, with women's and men's matches streaming live on ESPN3/WatchESPN at 4 p.m. PT and 9 p.m. PT, respectively.
