CHICAGO – The National Women's Soccer League draft was held in Chicago on Thursday and a pair of Trojans heard their names called as Leah Pruitt and Ally Prisock were selected.
Pruitt was taken by the NWSL's defending champions North Carolina Courage in the first round with the fifth overall pick, and Prisock was selected early in the second round with the 12th overall pick by the Houston Dash. It marks the second time in the last three years that multiple Trojans were picked in the NWSL draft. Five USC players were selected in 2017. USC was one of seven schools with multiple players drafted.
Pruitt was the Trojans' offensive catalyst all season long, finishing second on the team in points (33), goals (12) and assists (9), and in the top six in the Pac-12 in each category as well. She led the league and was ninth in the nation with six game-winning goals, helping USC to a 17-2-3 season and a run into the third round of the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, Pruitt was named to the All-America and Top Drawer Soccer Best XI third teams, and to the All-Region and All Pac-12 first teams
A member of the Trojans' 2016 NCAA Title team, Pruitt transferred to USC after her freshman season at San Diego State and proceeded to have an all-time great career. Pruitt finished her tenure with the Trojans tied for 10th on the program's career scoring list with 22 goals, sixth on the career points list with 65 and tied for fifth on the career assists list with 21. In addition to her numerous honors this season, Pruitt earned All Pac-12 second team recognition in 2017 and was the Mountain West Freshman of the year while at SDSU in 2015.
Prisock finished an extremely decorated USC career as the program's all-time leader in starts with 90 over the course of her tenure. She was a first-team All-American this season and a semifinalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy. Prisock was the linchpin of a USC defense that posted 15 shutouts in 2018 and finished with the sixth best goals against average (0.479) in the country en route to the best goal differential (57-11) in program history. She scored once and had one assist, helping to lead the Trojans to the fourth consecutive postseason appearance of her career and a run into the Sweet 16.
For her career, Prisock has been named to the All Pac-12 first team twice, All-Region first team twice, Top Drawer Soccer Best XI teams twice and earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honors in 2015. She was the third Trojan ever to garner All-America first team recognition and the fourth to be named a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. Starting every game at centerback during her career, Prisock oversaw the best four-year defensive stretch in program history with USC allowing just 0.61 goals per game during that span. She also helped lead the Trojans to their 2016 National Title, the second in program history.
The pair join a growing list of Trojans in the pros, with seven former USC players on NWSL rosters during the 2018 season and several others playing overseas. Pruitt joins Trojan alum Elizabeth Eddy on the Courage roster and Prisock joins former USC keeper and teammate Sammy Jo Prudhomme in Houston.
