USC scores the first 14 goals in a record-setting 32-goal performance against Concordia at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 1 USC men's water polo team rattled off 14 straight goals in the Trojans' home opener today, building momentum toward a final 32-7 win over visiting Concordia. Among the 14 Trojan scorers on the day were five USC newcomers who plugged in their first goals in home waters to help USC along to a program-record scoring output with 32 goals in the win. Leading the pack were a trio of Trojans — all underclassmen — as freshman Hannes Daube and sophomores Jacob Mercep and Marko Vavic each tallied four goals apiece. The decisive win over the Eagles improved USC to 3-0 overall on the year.
USC's only senior, Zach D'Sa, opened the Trojans' account with back-to back goals to light the fuse on USC's 14-goal surge. Six Trojans would combine for that 14-0 advantage before Concordia got on the board with a 6-on-5 strike in the late stages of the second period. Another Eagle power play would end the half after Daube rifled in his fourth goal of the game to make it a 15-2 score at the break.
In the second half, even more Trojans joined the scoresheet. Redshirt sophomore Troy Furniss delivered a career-high three goals during the fourth period, while Luka Karaman, Luke Wyatt and Alexander Lansill pumped in a pair of goals each during those final 16 minutes. By the final buzzer, 14 Trojans had scored in the game, while Sam Krutonog and Nic Porter shared time in the cage en route to the 32-7 final decision for the Trojans. Also on the defensive end, a steal-savvy freshman Jake Ehrhardt nabbed a whopping six takeaways to go along with a goal scored in the busy win for USC.
The Trojans now turn to a set of four games on tap this weekend at the Inland Empire Classic. USC will face Redlands and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday (Sept. 8) in Redlands before squaring off against Concordia again and then La Verne on Sunday (Sept. 9) in La Verne.
