Former Trojan Stephen Tarpley Makes MLB Debut

LOS ANGELES – Former USC pitcher Stephen Tarpley made his Major League debut this week for the New York Yankees, becoming the 113th former Trojan to play in the MLB.

Tarpley was a September call-up for the Yankees and on Sunday made his big league debut with one inning of relief against the Detroit Tigers.

The lefty reliever was a starting pitcher for the Trojans in 2012, when he earned All Pac-12 honorable mention after going 5-3 with a 3.22 ERA. Tarpley was drafted in the third round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. After being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tarpley was dealt to the Yankees in 2016 as part of the trade that sent Ivan Nova to the Pirates. He was named the 37th ranked prospect in the Yankees' farm system earlier this year.

Tarpley is the second former Trojan to make his MLB debut this season, with Robert Stock breaking through to the bigs for the San Diego Padres earlier this year.
