Trojans Teach Tennis
September 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis, Trojan Outreach, Features
On Friday, Sept. 7, the USC women's tennis team hosted students from LAUSD's Beyond the Bell program for a fundamental tennis clinic at the Marks Tennis Stadium at USC.
The group of 30+ middle school students was greeted by the team and started the clinic by learning how to prepare their bodies for physical activity through warm-ups, hitting drills and team building exercises.
The USC women's tennis team also led fun hitting circuits, taught proper tennis form and techniques during practice. With the help from head coach Alison Swain and assistant coach Chris Wootton, the team was able to create relationships with the students throughout the clinic to help build up their confidence, self-esteem, and teamwork abilities in the sport.
After the end of the clinic, the students gathered for a team photo, were gifted complimentary USC tennis balls, Trojan Outreach t-shirts, and dinner from Chipotle.
Beyond the Bell teacher Jose Llamas was named runner-up for this year's Extra Yards for Teachers award. He was also surprised with a gift card, shirt and check for $500 to be used for the program. The winner will be announced on Sept. 21. The experience the students received exposed them to USC's campus, playing facilities and provided them with fun and support from our fellow Trojan Athletics family.
