LOS ANGELES – USC Women's Soccer Head Coach Keidane McAlpine announced the signing of three more incoming freshmen to round out the Trojans' 2018 recruiting class. USC has already announced the signing of four other incoming freshmen and four transfers in a class ranked second in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer.
USC will welcome two goalkeepers in Anna Smith and MacKenna Carmichael, and a defender in Kaylin Martin. All three players will join the team for the 2018 season.
Here's a look at USC's incoming players:
Anna Smith – 5'9" – Goalkeeper – Sammamish, Wash. – Skyline HS – Seattle Reign Academy
Smith comes in as the 34th ranked player in the nation according to Top Drawer Soccer after earning Seattle Times and ECNL Best XI honors during her prep and club careers. During her time playing for Skyline HS, Smith set records for shutouts, scoreless minutes and saves in a season, while also earning All-Kingco first team honors. On the club circuit, she won ECNL Conference titles 2015-17 in addition to her Best XI recognition. Smith was also invited to Youth National Team camps in 2013 and 2014. She earned academic recognition as a Skyline Student of the Month twice.
Smith on why she chose USC: "I chose USC because I wanted to be a part of something special. I have strong admiration for the team both in the classroom and on the field. I can't wait to call myself a member of the Trojan family."
McAlpine on Smith: "Anna has a great goalkeeping frame and she's been exposed to a lot of high-level goalkeeping coaches. She is a great competitor, a good shot-stopper and her presence in goal is fantastic. Anna plays with a calmness about her and I think all of her attributes are going to make for some great competition at the goalkeeper spot for us."
MacKenna Carmichael – 5'8" – Goalkeeper – Ladera Ranch, Calif. – California Connections Academy – San Diego Surf/LA Galaxy SD
Carmichael comes to USC with a plethora of high-level club and Youth National Team training experience. Playing for both the LA Galaxy SD and San Diego Surf, Carmichael earned Best XI awards from Top Drawer Soccer several times and earned Southwest Regional Team honors. Carmichael was invited to a U-18 Women's National Team training camp in November of 2017 and to a Training Center Combine in February of 2017. Carmichael on why she chose USC: "I chose USC because I felt a gravitation to it. It's the right fit for me as a player and person."
McAlpine on Carmichael: "MacKenna is ultra-competitive. She's a great shot-stopper and her kicking game is good as well. She's going to add a tremendous amount of fire to the competition for the goalkeeping position."
Kaylin Martin – 5'9" – Defender – Aliso Viejo, Calif. – Santa Margarita Catholic HS – SoCal Blues
Martin won a CIF and State Championship with Santa Margarita Catholic in 2016 and was the team's Defensive Player of the Year two straight seasons.
