June 13, 2018 | Track & Field, Features
USC senior Kendall Ellis was named to The Bowerman Semifinalist List, it was announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today (June 13). The Bowerman is awarded annually at the end of the track and field season to the most outstanding track and field athlete.
Ellis led the USC women's team to the 2018 NCAA Track & Field team title with a dramatic final leg in the women's 4x400m race, edging the Purdue runner by .07 seconds, with the 10 points scored in the event earning USC the title by one point over Georgia. Ellis made up a seemingly impossible gap over the race's final 80 meters to pass both the Oregon and Purdue runners for the victory and create an instant classic. Ellis was credited with a 50.05 final leg. USC's 4x400m relay won with a time of 3:27.06 which is the fourth-best in program history. Ellis also placed second in the open 400m with a time of 50.19 which is the highest finish and fastest time ever run by a Trojan at the finals.
Ellis won the Pac-12 women's 400m title with a meet-record and school-record time of 49.99. She is one of three collegiate woman to run a sub-50 400m dash, joining record-holder Courtney Okolo who ran 49.71 in 2016 and Lynna Irby who ran 49.80 in the 2018 NCAA finals. Ellis also placed fourth in the 200m with a time of 22.74 (+2.9w), and was part of USC's winning 4x100m and 4x400m relays at the Pac-12 Championships contested on May 12-13. Ellis accounted for 20 points in the team competition as USC's women won the team title for the first time since 1996. The 2018 Bowerman semifinalist Ellis was named the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Track Athlete of the Year, the fourth Trojan to earn the honor, joining Inger Miller (1994), Virginia Powell (2006) and Nia Ali (2011).
Ellis won the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field women's 400m title by setting a USA indoor record with a time of 50.34. She broke the previous USA record of 50.46 set by Phyllis Francis in 2014. Ellis also anchored USC's winning 4x400m relay team which posted a time of 3:27.45, which is also the fifth-fastest time ever by a collegiate women's quartet. USC holds the record of 3:27.03 set last year at the NCAA Indoor Championships, also anchored by Ellis.
The three finalists for The Bowerman will be named on June 20 and the winner will be awarded in San Antonio on December 20 at the USTFCCCA Convention.
