Trojans, with four freshmen and a sophomore, finish third, led by Jennifer Chang final round 68.
Freshman Jennifer Chang fired a 4-under 68 while freshman Gabi Ruffels came in at par to lead the final-round efforts of No. 5 USC, which battled high winds and rain to finish third at the 2018 NCAA Madison Regional at the University Ridge G.C. on Wednesday (May 9) to advance to the Trojans' 21st straight NCAA Championships final.
Â
The Trojans – featuring a lineup with four freshmen and a sophomore all in their first NCAA competition – finished at 2-under 862 (285-288-289) in a tightly packed field, first-place Duke (14-under 850) the only team in the top 8 to escape final-round drama. Virginia (859) took second with Arizona State and Ohio State tied for fourth (863) and Northwestern securing the final berth in sixth at 864. Illinois (866) and Oregon State (868) just missed the cut.
Â
USC now advances to the NCAA Championships, hosted by Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., May 18-23, where the Trojans will be pursuing their fourth national crown and 13th straight top 5 national finish.
Â
Chang finished sixth at 5-under 211 (73-70-68) for her fourth top 6 finish in her last five 54-hole events and her sixth straight top 15 overall. Her second-best round of the season featured five birdies, including twice on back-to-back holes.
Â
Sophomore Allisen Corpuz tied for 11th at 1-under 215 (69-72-74), also her sixth top 15 result in a row. She had two birdies in her final round.
Â
Freshman Amelia Garvey tied for 30th at 2-over 218 (70-72-76), freshman Alyaa Abdulghany tied for 50th at 6-over 222 (73-74-75) and Ruffels ties for 63rd at 10-over 226 (77-77-72). Her final round mixed three birdies and bogeys.

The Trojans, in pursuit of their 21st straight trip to the NCAA Championships finals, remain at 3-under at 573 (285-288), now 11 back of first-place Duke, whose 9-under led the field today. USC is three behind day 1 leader Virginia and a stroke better than both Arizona State and Oregon State, tied for fourth. USC is four better than a three-way tie for sixth that includes Illinois, Northwestern and Ohio State, the top 8 teams jockeying for six spots to the NCAA Championships final in Stillwater, Okla.
Â
Chang used a 4-under front 9 as a springboard to her strong day, a double bogey on 17 the only blemish on her card. It is her sixth round of par or better in her last seven outings.
Â
Corpuz is tied for seventh at 3-under 141 (69-72) as she eyes her sixth straight top 15 finish. She was 3-under on the day thanks to a 3-under front – which included her second eagle of the week -- before a late bogey on 17 and a double on 18 squared her round.
Â
Garvey is tied for ninth at 2-under 142 (70-72), putting together her best 36 holes as a Trojan. She, too, got hot on the front with a 3-under through 9 before three back 9 bogeys evened her round.
