Lopes & Gonzalez Both Place Fourth At Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships

Lyndsey Lopes placed fourth in the heptathlon and Michael Gonzalez took fourth in the decathlon on the final day of action at the Pac-12 Multi-Events Championships hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. today (May 6). Lopes earned USC's women five points in the team competition and Gonzalez earned USC's men five points in the team competition. The remaining 20 events of the 2018 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships will take place at Stanford on May 12-13.

Heptathlon:
- Lopes opened the day by placing third in the long jump with a best leap of 19-2.75/5.86m (+2.8w). That jump earned her 807 points and she now had 4,278 after five events.
- She then had her best javelin toss in the final round, posting a mark of 125-1 (38.14m) to place fourth in the event and earn another 632 points. Going into the final event, she was in third place with 4,910 points, just a 27-point lead over fourth place.
- Lopes took sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 2:21.04 to earn her final 809 points. She ended up in fourth place overall with a PR of 5,719 points. She bettered her fifth-place standing on USC's all-time list by 145 points and is now just 67 points out of fourth place.
- Gonzalez began the day by taking second in his heat and fifth overall in the 110m hurdles with a PR of 15.94 to earn 740 points. After the first event of the day, he was in sixth place with 3,790 points.
- Next he placed seventh in the discus throw with his best throw of 92-2 (28.09m) coming in his final attempt. He earned 427 points in the discus throw and had 4,217 points after seven events.
- Gonzalez then took second in his specialty event, the pole vault, clearing 16-2.75 (4.95m) and earning 895 points. After eight events, he had vaulted into third place with 5,112 points.
- Gonzalez improved on each throw of the javelin, finishing with a best mark of 114-6 (34.90m) to earn 369 points. He finished sixth in the event and remained in third place by five points with a total of 5,481.
- Gonzalez concluded his first 1500m race and first decathlon with a time of 5:21.23 to place seventh in the event to earn 444 points. Gonzalez totaled 5,925 points in the decathlon to finish fourth and earn USC's first five points at the Pac-12 Championships.
